Instant News Katy was founded in 2019 by two former Katy High alumni journalists — Sarah Mendoza and James Whitlock — who watched too many local stories sit in the Houston Chronicle's queue for hours while the only Katy-focused updates showed up on Nextdoor. We started this newsroom to publish what actually matters to people who live in Katy, Cinco Ranch, and Fulshear: the I-10 closure, the KISD weather closure, the small business opening on Mason Road.
Six years later, we're still the only staffed local desk in the Greater Katy area, and we still publish breaking stories faster than any regional outlet — a 4-minute average, verified against our internal dashboard, on the stories our readers care about most.
No bylines, no "staff writer," no masthead anonymity — Instant News Katy is run by people you can name, reach by phone, and see at Katy ISD board meetings.
Katy High School Class of 2011. Covers city hall, KISD board, and breaking local news across all seven high school zones. Previously a general-assignment reporter at the Houston Chronicle's Katy bureau, Sarah left in 2019 to launch Instant News Katy's founding newsroom with her co-founder and former classmate.
