A Morton Ranch High School student is facing child porn charges. Prosecutors told a judge that Kyle Boman, 17, had more than 3,100 explicit images on his iPod.
School officials received a tip from another student that Boman had naked pictures of students on his iPod. According to the charges, he was called to the office and the principal looked through the pictures and recognized two female students.

As one other commenter stated on the other thread, why is this in the criminal courts if he did not have anything to do with the origins of the photos??
I understand kiddie prom is illegal to possess, but is using the criminal justice system to come down on a teenage kid what the law was intended to do?
Find the source of the photos and go get them.
I suppose you are right if the kid reported to authorities the first or second picture that found its way innocently onto his Ipod. But after 3,100 pictures, the criminal justice system is the perfect venue for this “kid”,
From what I’ve heard, the majority of the photos did not picture children. There is a possibility that he hadn’t even looked through them all yet and wasn’t aware that some did. At 17, I think he needs to be given several hours of community service and a chance to prove that he learned from his mistake.
For the purpose of this discussion I don’t see how the number of photos factors into the discussion. It would imply that if it had “only” been 5 or 10 we might take a different view of the matter. With the Internet and a high speed down loader you can rip through hundreds of photos in no time at all.
To reinforce my previous point, (other thread) we have multiple stories about this kid but not a single word about where he got the material, who posted it, and who set up the photos in the first place. In some DA’s office there are “high fives” because we are prepared to prosecute yet another sex offender and bring the full weight of the criminal justice system down on him and his family. His crime; he downloaded pictures available to anyone who can type. At least that is the totality of the crime as disclosed to us so far.
As long as this is the case, I once again, say let’s go after the source and those who actually place our children at risk. There is an unrelated story on this site about an ADULT who it seems abused children in the first person. From the description in the article, this is the kind of fellow we want to round up fast and get out of our community.
A seventeen year old boy who trips onto a site, gets excited, and downloads what he sees is not the “mastermind” we need to hunt down. He/she is still out there abusing young children and needs to be stopped.
Some might argue this kid is one of the Internet’s victims. If this ruins his life and bankrupts his family how can we think differently? Get this kid some help and save his life. Let’s not throw it away due to this non violent behavior.
As an adult, I know there are lines, but to a kid this can’t seem to be all that different from his dad or grand dad going out behind the house and sneaking a peek at a Playboy which at the time was racy behavior and in the opinion of some, behavior only a pervert would sanction.
The times are changing. Just sit down and watch an hour of prime time TV or go to a movie. Check out most any video game. Our kids do! Then we sit in judgement about the poor choices some make. The problem is systemic. And for the record, I am NOT saying this child is without sin, but let’s fit the crime to the situation and the punishment accordingly. Community service, counseling, and less time on the Internet for other than school assignments might be a good starting place.
