Two Katy ISD principals have been selected by Raise Your Hand Texas to attend The Principals’ Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education this summer.
The duo will be among only 73 Texas principals chosen from what the district called “an extremely strong pool of applicants this year.”
Katy ISD principals selected to attend professional training were:
- Dr. Ann Smith, principal of Golbow Elementary. Smith will attend The Art of Leadership session.
- Elisa Farris, principal of Morton Ranch Elementary. Farris will attend The Evolving Vision session.
Principals selected to attend The Principals’ Center come from 50 school districts throughout the state.
In the competitive selection process, evaluators focused on both essays and personal interviews, seeking evidence of exemplary leadership abilities and mindsets that research shows effective school leaders possess.
Raise Your Hand Texas sought to represent a diverse mixture of rural, urban, and suburban districts; of elementary, middle, and high schools; and of the many geographical regions that span the vast state of Texas.
The Summer Institutes at the Harvard Graduate School of Education will expose the 2012 Raise Your Hand Texas Leadership Program Cohort to the foremost national and international experts in the fields of education and leadership.
Founded in 1981, the Principals’ Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education has dedicated itself to the support, development, and improvement of school principals.

Ann Smith of Golbow – the same principal that apparently has/had issues with her administrative skills – is the best KISD has to send to HARVARD?
OK……..
You don’t have to be the best we have to get in, just have a supervisor recommend you and then get through the cut for the essay and interview process… My guess is that being from KISD has some clout… I’d be curious to know how many more KISD principles applied, if any…
Maybe she’s the perfect principle for a little more training…
If your comment is true, then this Harvard conference isn’t all that it’s cracked up (or perceived) to be when people think of Harvard. My perception is that the best of the best of the best (MiB) were being selected and attending to “show off” or “market” the reputation of the school district they represent – NOT an actual leadership training seminar. If Dr. Smith needs training, she can do leadership training in Houston and anywhere around Texas for that matter – no need to go to Harvard for that. I believe that the Harvard thing is similar to some business seminars where it’s mostly bragging ang boasting and very little learning – and companies send their BEST people for that. Considering all the issues at Golbow, I certainly would hope that she’s not the best.
In reality, it seems to be Big Al twisting the knife in the back of the “village idiots” of the district – just because he CAN.
Interesting.. You hold value in the name and Mary doesn’t think very highly in the program… So what is it, a program of prestige, a BS program or a program for learning how to be better at your craft?
Most likely it’s an educrates version of the “your child is great and gets to go to Europe to play on our “elite” baseball team” – and here’s the bill (probably paid for by a grant in this instance)… Or maybe it’s a “field trip to xx, sign folks up and we get more money next year”… It could very well be what it’s billed as and maybe, just maybe someone will get better at their job instead of coasting through life…
As far as the Harvard name, didn’t Obama Do something there? I mean, really let’s hold that name up because we all know nothing with that in the title could be less than stellar… I guess I’ll send some emails out and see what the line is on the story…
And THAT is a perfect illustration of “talking around the issue”.
Thank you.
I received an update on the KISD police officer that needed our prayers. He is doing better and my be able to return to work. Your prayers are still needed. Thank you.
…speaking of Katy principals attending Harvard.
