Terri Majors Announces Candidacy for Katy ISD School Board

Saying she is “determined to see positive changes in Katy ISD,” retired Golbow Elementary Principal Terri Majors has announced she is running for a seat on the school board.

Majors made the announcement during the public comments portion of Monday night’s school board meeting.

There had been much speculation Majors would become a candidate following her vocal support of parents and staff members at her former school who complained about “bullying” and intimidation practices by the current principal.

Majors pledged to use her experience and expertise as a professional educator to help restore the district’s reputation in the wake of the Golbow allegations and other high-profile controversies in recent years.

“As a committed Katy ISD patron with a professional background as a teacher and KISD principal, I have followed district news and developments over the past year with growing concerns for our students, staff and parents. I have always advocated for children, their parents and our school personnel, and it has become clear that a more caring and ethical environment is needed in the district,” Majors said. “This must start with a better school board. At this time, I am announcing my intention to run for a position on this board, knowing that you already have three new members who have shown the way to reform and improvement for our district. With my election, a majority will be reached to end current policies that lessen the rights of patrons and allow unfair and negative treatment of employees.”

Majors also pledged to not accept campaign donations from vendors who do business with the school district.

“I ask for the support of patrons and staff knowing one of the greatest challenges is pulling together for the sake of our community,” she said. “Campaign contributions will not be accepted from contractors who do business with the district, and I will work for the adoption of policies that set high ethical standards for all candidates.”

Majors also praised InstantNewsKaty for its coverage of district issues.

“I want to thank InstantNewsKaty for its responsive, factual reporting of concerns I have voiced to this board over the past year; our public deserves to be informed,” she said.

“I am determined to see positive changes in Katy ISD that include a return to the caliber of advanced academics; curricular excellence; ethical, honorable leadership and judicious, inclusive treatment of all stakeholders that was the envy of school districts around the country,” Majors said. “As Justice Oliver Wendell Homes said, ‘The great thing in this world is not so much where we are, but in what direction we are moving.’”

    I hope she wins

  2. ciri93 says:

    I do as well!

  3. Angie says:

She would be perfect for a seat on the school board! I hope she can receive the support she needs to win so that Katy ISD can make a change for the better.

  4. westsidebill says:

I was just thinking about her and Golbow this morning and how we hadn’t heard much about things around there lately. Apparently Big Al has fixed all the issues that the campus was suffering from and there’s no reason to do anything more.

Even if elected, how do we know for sure that she won’t drop her campaign promises about fairer, more professional work environments from teachers? Hmmmmm…………..

  5. westsidebill says:

Actually, electing Ms. Majors would probably be a waste of time, seeing that she’s been banned from speaking at BOT meetings by Joe Adams. Maybe we should seek other candidates? Or will she be able to un-ban herself from his executive order?

  6. ciri93 says:

Come on WSB. The woman has stood up to Frailey and the BOT numerous times in public. Why on earth would she back off. She’s retired. She could have just stayed home in her pajamas instead of what she did. I think she deserves a little more respect than that.

  7. James Yaklin says:

I am glad that a strong candidate that is looking for reform within Katy ISD has decided to join this race. Mrs. Majors had been a vocal opponent of the status quo and a critic of the Superindentent.

Mrs. Majors has also clearly illustrated that she cares about the students, parents, and teachers while attempting to get resolution to a bad situation in her community (the Golbow Elementary crisis). We need more board members to come out and listen and interact with the community like Bill Proctor and Terry Hucakaby have done. We do not need more board members that cowardly hide from the public and refrain from listening to anything that does not inflate their own ego such as the five remaining board members and Superintendent Alton Frailey.

Mrs. Majors knows that the schools belong to the communities and the people of the district. With the addition of Mrs. Majors on the Katy ISD school board there will be three reform minded trustees and this is a good start to continuing the reform of Katy ISD.

Now we need one more strong, community-minded, reform-driven candidate to counteract the loss of Henry Dibrell from the reformers and to reduce the Katy Kowards to a minority.

  8. Old Katy Guy says:

I wholeheartedly support Ms. Majors in her bid for the BOT. She is a person of integrity and has common sense. She values the work of the classroom teacher and respects parents, taxpayers and employees.

Along with myself and 8 direct family members who are teacheres in KiSD with 3 to 30 years of service with KISD we are pleased that she is putting her bid in for the KISD BOT.

  9. 4my3sons says:

Westsidebill’s comments surprise and disturb me, especially his question, “How do we know for sure that she won’t drop her campaign promises about fairer, more professional, work environments for teachers”. Her record of advocacy for teachers speaks for itself, and Mrs. Majors certainly has vocalized and documented her unhappiness with the “old” trustees and the superintendent regarding THEIR documented atrocities toward KISD teachers and other employees.

Please check my comments throughout the past few years on the Chronicle and InstantNewsKaty and you’ll see drops of sarcasm falling off my comments.

  10. Darrell says:

    4my3sons

Do you agree that people who are running for a position that sets public policy should not post anonymously on blogs? Do agree that this practice is dishonest?

    • ciri93 says:

      Darrell,
To whom are you referring to?

    • lost my mind says:

Since the only person who has said they are running is Terri Majors and I do hope she wins, may we assume you think Ms. Majors is coming to the boards under cover?

I doubt this is be the case or ever was. She has no problem standing up in a large public room and speaking her mind.

So you must be talking about someone else who is running but has not told us yet. It is me? Is it you? I am running out of options here.

    • dracofemme says:

He could be referring to the incumbents, Shaw and Howard.

  11. Darrell says:

For now I will leave that bit of information up to the blogger to disclose. I am curious to see if this person is as honest as he/she claims to be .It is not you, westside bill, Old Katy Guy.

    • Just Wondering2 says:

I don’t care who wants to come and share their thoughts. Along those same lines what would you say to a sitting BOT member blogging and calling us villiage idiots and hiding behind a false name?

I know of two of them, one has recently left the BOT one is still there. I believe some can guess the name of at least one of them. Let’s leave this up for a few days and see if anyone can guess correctly.

  12. Mary McGarr says:

Everyone needs to send Mr. Majors $10 or whatever they can afford. It takes money to run a campaign, and if she’s going to volunteer her time to run and serve, her supporters need to fund her effort. Make sure that your check is a personal and not a business check.

    Ante up!

I have been very impressed with Mrs. Majors willingness to stick her neck out in the defense of others. She could have taken her retirement check and gone home. She chose not to. That is an admirable action in my book and makes her a worthy school board candidate.

    • Darrell says:

I am aware of the individual’s you are speaking of and I thinks eel it was dishonest. I am now see it happen ….again… with a brand new candidate who is claiming to be different than the on the way out BOT. Bad start in my opinion. Seems like the beginning of the same old nonsense. This person clearly doesn’t have the courage or honesty to step out. Just add your name. Again… more of the same.

  13. TX2008 says:

Mrs. Majors: we support you, I was at the Board meeting last night, I got the first hand experience on how Mrs. Fox abused her power.

  14. determinedmom says:

Mrs. Majors thank you for stepping up to run for the KISD school board. I hope you win!

Possibly parents with real concerns regarding the sons and daughters of KISD can begin to have their voices heard. Not get what they want ,but be heard and actually listened to!

Possibly we can have a school board meeting that is not so full of corruption and lies that we can sit in the room and not laugh at what the board members are saying and doing. It would be nice if the board members were examples I could take my son to and speak highly of them. (He has met two)

Board members to the KISD school board are voluntary positions, but when they forget they are representatives of “We the People” and do as they wish they are no longer needed. That is one of the saddest issues I see with many of the Board members. Not only does it affect them it hurts those around them. If it is so valuable to be on the Board for longer than two terms at a voluntary status …..we have a problem.

Mrs. Majors we are behind you but one thing. Please always remember you will be representing “We the People”. Though we are passionate with our words, we are all wanting to be heard so that a truly informed decision can be made.

The manner in which we speak is our own and in our own way. If you win this election, please hear us and think on what we say.

From one who can not speak the subject that is forbidden. THANK YOU!

  15. mndannen@aol.com says:

    A.D. Muller says
Mrs. Majors pledge not to take Vendor money is a breath of fresh air. Ethics violations by Adam’s are well publicized. I will pull the reports from Howard, Snyder, and Shaw and Fox. Hopefully, all Candidates will take the pledge. Hopefully, Fox, Shaw, and Howard won’t run. Adams should step down now.

  16. KatyTaxes says:

Hopefully, this is the continuation of the end. The EDC & Chamber will be throwing a LOT of money against her, so whe will indeed need our financial support. Consider it an investment in the *future* of KISD; the one without the buddy/buddy pandering and hopefully one with more focus on education / less on fluff. I look forward to a board majority that will represent the students’s and taxpayer’s interest instead of the Chamber puppet-master’s concerns. I especially look forward to a change in administration… one that recognizes who they work for and who pays their (above the table) paycheck.

  17. Not_so_fast says:

Before everyone gets all excited about Mrs. Majors running for BOT and starts throwing her campaign money, perhaps you should do some research on her administration history at Golbow and not just her actions of the last year. She should be the last one to say she is for ethics and advocating what’s best for the students and parents – they weren’t a concern for her when she was principal.

  18. ciri93 says:

    Not so fast…please share…

  19. Whats up says:

It didn’t take long for the smear campaign to begin. No facts, just an indictment.

I suppose we can expect plenty of this in the weeks and months ahead.

I hope Ms. Majors understands that desperate people do odd things. When she is elected the same people will smile and let her know how much they supported her, voted for her, etc. All lies of course, but that is Katy politics.

It will be interesting to compare her experiences and contributions side by side with any incumbent who is foolish enough to ask for our votes again. They have already shown they have problems supervising ONE employee.

  20. Darrell says:

My reply was intended for Just Wondering 2 and not Mary. I really should not do this on my phone. JW2…you brought up the sitting board members…I assume you feel that their blogging anonymously was and/ is unethical and dishonest. If you believe this, as I do, wouldn’t you say that a candidate who has announced they are running and continues to blog anonymously is also acting in a unethical dishonest manner? If it was just an honest mistake shouldn’t they correct that error.

I want a truly new board. I have had it!!!! If this person is willing to lie to their SUPPORTERS they are NOT different.

  21. Darrell says:

For the record… I am not refering to you. I would like to add that if this was not such a serious violation of trust I would find it amusing to read about how awesome this person thinks they are. It is it disgusting!!! Different …HA HA.. more of the same.

  22. Darrell says:

The blogger is 4my3sons. For now I will let you figure it out. It is my hope that this blogger will come out on their own and prove that they are worthy of the backing they are getting from some really great people. (some of whom have put decades of work into reform).

  23. Darrell says:

It’s an easy thing for someone other than me to figure out. All you have to do is watch them log onto INK see if they can log on using than name 4my3sons using their email address….the one they have used to email you… Not a brand new one.

  24. Fmr. G.E. tchr. says:

Not_so_fast must be one of those “brain washed” Alton Frailey/ Ann Smith “zombies”. Unethical… non-advocate… those titles go to the the former a.p. who went to Wood Creek, and the other a.p. who is still there.
I have worked for a lot of principals over the years & Terri Majors is the most professional, caring, & concerned principal that I have ever worked for. So caring in fact that we keep in contact via e-mail several years later.
Terri Majors definately has my vote! Between Dr. Proctor, Mr. Huckabee, & caring individuals like her, “watch out” Frailey & the “old guard” ‘cuz your “shady ways” gotta go! (Maybe to Dallas?)

    • Not_so_fast says:

      To Fmr. G.E. tchr.,
No I am not a Frailey/Smith “zombie”. For one I wouldn’t even know Smith if she was standing in front of me. I, like most of the bloggers here have no problem with a change to the BOT – I believe administrations need actual oversight, not just a rubber stamp. I just don’t think Mrs. Majors is the right choice based on her administrative history. Over the past year, she has raised issues with the current G.E. administration – all of those may be true. My point was that she was guilty of some of those same issues when she was principal. Nothing was done to her because she obviously had friends in high places (i.e. Merrell and/or others).

      • westsidebill says:

Again, I ask, please share. I find it difficult to imagine that Majors would be fighting so hard at her former campus over something she did herself while she was the campus leader. I find it even harder to believe that some of her former staff members who worked under her and her “unethical” leadership wouldn’t have brought these charges to light a year ago.

So again: facts talk, lackeys walk. Be specific or head on down that lonely sidewalk….

  25. lost my mind says:

Gosh Darrell I tried to follow your notes one after the other and I wonder how many of us got lost cause I sure did.

Who has announced they are running and is blogging under a strange screen name? For the record, does it make a difference?

  26. Darrell says:

4my3sons is Terri Majors. I suppose it isn’t a big deal to some but I find it dishonest and unethical. The same way I found Eric Duhon and Rebecca Fox unethical and dishonest for doing the same thing. As I recall it was source of much discussion on this blog as it it should be.

I do not question what she has done in the last year for this community but the existing board members have also did a lot for this community pror to sitting on the board

A lot of people have dedicated a lot of time to bring in a board that is honest and ethical and she is off to a very bad start.

    Same song…different verse.

Correction to previous email. She can log on to INK as 4my3son and request a new password. It will then email and if ends up in in inbox…you have your proof.

  27. lost my mind says:

I went back and read the post from 4my3sons, and don’t see a problem with it. If this is Ms. Majors, I think it would have been better to do as Proctor and Huckaby have done before her and identify herself. Then make the exact response but in the first person.

If true, I doubt she has much practice in the area of political back stabbing and half truths and chose not to jump in yet.

So Ms. Major if it is you, I think it would be great to have you on the blog, under your name, and respond to people.

Your participation would be a nice precedence and a welcomed change to the level of transparency either of the gentleman you seek to replace have shown us thus far.

Where do I sent my campaign contribution?

  28. 4my3sons says:

Over the last year I have enjoyed reading many of the comments that have gone back and forth. I have spent a great amount of time with employees and parents trying to find a way to help them. I have been inspired by all you. If you check the achives you will find my cause- driven issues in news releases that were reported under my name. These include problems with bullying, lack of leadership, despair and fear caused by an unhealthy work environment, and more. During this past year of publicly addressing the school board, I have usually chosen not to reply to anyone’s comments either under my name or anonymously. You will shortly see some comments to those of you who have impressed me; I hope are willing to step beyond comments to action on my campaign and before the Board. It is not easy and is even scary to put yourself into their environment, to criticize and to ask for fairness when there is none. There are those who know my ethical standards and to whom I defer for validation of my integrity. Let’s move on to improving the district with the election of two new Board members. Anyone who wants to help with my campaign can e-mail me at tmajors@consolidated.net. Be assured that any comments made by me in the future will be made under my “real” name, Terri Majors.

  29. lost my mind says:

Ms. Majors, welcome to the discussion. I look forward to the campaign and encourage everyone to keep it civil, honest, above board, and on point. Your actions speak volumes and I applaud your using your name to post.

We should encourage all candidates to come to these boards, community meetings, debates, etc., and allow the voters to know more about them and how they will benefit our district.

Words like “more of the same, we are going to get better, trust me,” etc. are of little worth. We get unhealthy doses of that from all the other races from dog catcher to President of the USA.

Tell us how we are going to be better with you and why to vote for you.

Trustees are responsible for our money, our kids, and their education. We care and want to trust those in charge to do right by the stakeholders. It is a simple concept, but one we will embrace for the right person(s) in May at the polls.

Joyfully and sadly you will have detractors, supporters, and back stabbers. Welcome to politics. You and the others, including incumbents, have my thanks for putting yourself out there when most of us won’t. Thank you!

  30. Mary McGarr says:

Ms. Majors is already ahead of the curve by realizing what she should have done and by very graciously correcting the situation.

When did any incumbent school board candidate ever do that before?

  31. Just Wondering2 says:

Mary, is that a trick question? I have scratched my head and other body parts, and can’t think of a single time.

Come on, give us a clue.
