Katy ISD celebrated a milestone this morning as it welcomed the district’s 60,000th student, Shelby Coleman, an eighth-grader at WoodCreek Junior High.

KATY ISD 60,000th STUDENT – Katy ISD welcomed WoodCreek Junior High eighth-grader Shelby Coleman as the district’s 60,000th student. Shown are, from left, Greg Coleman, father of the student; WoodCreek Junior High Principal Patti Shafer, Coleman and Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey.
Superintendent Alton Frailey and WoodCreek Junior High Principal Patti Shafer welcomed Coleman and her parents in a special ceremony at the school.
“We recently moved from Florida to Katy for a job opportunity,” said Greg Coleman, father of the 60,000th student. “As we were looking for a home around Houston, many people suggested the Katy and Cinco Ranch area. We thought it was a nice area and had great schools, so we chose to make our home here.”
The Coleman family also has an older daughter, Shannon, attending Seven Lakes High School this year.
Since last week, the school district has enrolled more than 900 new students, bringing the total enrollment to 60,977. This is 120 students over the district’s 2010-2011 projection of 60,857; and 2,526 more students than there were at the close of the 2010-2009 school year.
Over the last four years, Katy ISD has grown by more than 10,000 students.
“Our enrollment projections are based on the annual growth rate of approximately three percent, and we typically see an increase in enrollment between the first day of school and right after Labor Day,” Frailey said.
WoodCreek Junior High School is one of the district’s newest junior high schools.
The campus opened its doors on August 25, 2008 to 885 students. Now in its third year, the school serves more than 1,550 students.
