Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for Katy-area residents who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.
BE AN ADVOCATE for women victimized by domestic abuse. Volunteering with an organization that works to prevent violence against Asian women, you’ll help heal the hurt of past abuse and foster healthier interaction among family members in the future. Training will equip you to handle calls from your home, providing peer counseling and referring women on to other needed services. Knowledge of an Asian language is helpful but not required.
BRING SOME CHEER and good nutrition to homebound senior citizens by serving as a “Meals on Wheels” driver for a local United Way agency. Delivering hot lunches to these low-income shut-ins, you’ll help enable them to maintain their independence and provide them with much-needed human contact. You’ll pick up the meals at a Katy location on your choice of weekdays and deliver them to seniors in the general area.
SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN respond enthusiastically to the love and attention they get from caring adults in a program called “Family Friends”. Each volunteer is assigned a child to visit once a week for a one-to-one session of recreation and conversation. These get-togethers help enrich the youngsters’ self-esteem and give their parents a little time off to attend to other matters. Training is provided.
THIS IS THE TIME of year that a local chapter of a foreign exchange program is recruiting host families for the fall academic semester. Students from all around the world will arrive in August to attend schools in Fort Bend County. These youngsters are 16 to 18 years old, all speak English, and they have their own living allowances. Call now to find out more about this exciting cultural experience available to you and your family.
