Cinco Ranch Night Readers To Discuss ‘Mao’s Last Dancer’

Fort Bend County Libraries is inviting booklovers to attend the next meeting of the Cinco Ranch Night Readers book club.

The meeting will be held next Tuesday, Aug. 19, beginning at 7 p.m. in the conference room #2 of the Cinco Ranch Branch Library.

The book to be discussed is Li Cunxin’s autobiography, “Mao’s Last Dancer.”

Li Cunxin achieved worldwide fame as a principal dancer with the Houston Ballet. His story leading up to that point, however, is one from which an international cloak-and-dagger thriller could be written.

As a child, Li was whisked away from his poverty-stricken village in northeast China to become a student of Madame Mao’s ballet program in Beijing. He visited Texas in 1979 as part of a cultural exchange program, and soon fell in love with the country and a woman who would eventually become his wife.

In Mao’s Last Dancer, Li describes the remarkable series of events that led to his dramatic defection to the United States.

Copies of the book are available at the checkout desk.

Anyone interested in joining the literary review club is invited to attend.
