KATY BARBARIANS – The Katy Barbarians Rugby Football Club celebrates its recent third place win at the 2010 USA Rugby National U19/High School Championships in Utah.
The Barbarians defeated Belmont Shore of California in what was widely regarded as the upset of the tournament. In the final minutes of the match Katy Rugby scored a late try and converted to capture the third place crown by a score of 20-19.
The Barbarians lost only one match during the 2010 season, that to the ultimate tournament champions United from Utah.
Over the last year, Katy Rugby has seen a significant increase in membership and how has teams at the U19, U17, U15, U13, U11, U9 and minis age groups. In addition, the club now has its own international-sized rugby field complete with rugby posts in George Bush Park.
Several Katy Barbarians were also on the Texas U19 select squad, which was unbeaten at the 2010 Rocky Mountain Challenge in Colorado this summer. Texas beat Minnesota 33-22, Arizona 41-0, and Wisconsin 29-10 in the matches leading up to the championship.
Rugby Texas then defeated reigning champions Utah 7-3 to take the tournament crown.
The Rocky Mountain Challenge is one of five tournaments USA Rugby uses to identify emerging players for its “Elite High Performance” teams. Selected players may go on to compete in matches and attend training camps with the U18 and U20 USA National teams.
