Earlier this week, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst announced a realignment of committee assignments for the 81st Legislature, assigning State Sen. Joan Huffman to six committees expected to have a sweeping impact on the overall operation of state government.
Huffman will now serve as vice chair of both the higher education and criminal justice committees.
Huffman brings unique expertise to the criminal justice committee, having served as both a prosecutor and judge in Harris County.
As a prosecutor, she tried in more than 100 jury trials, including murders, sexual assaults, aggravated robberies and sexual assault of children. Huffman was then elected to preside over the 183rd Criminal District Court for two terms.
Huffman will also join the jurisprudence committee and will continue her role on the transportation and homeland security, health and human services and redistricting committees, as well as the sunset advisory commission.
“Our state faces many challenges, and I am humbled by Lt. Gov. Dewhurst’s confidence in my ability to serve Texas in this new capacity,” Huffman said.
Huffman’s expansive senatorial district extends along the Gulf Coast from Port Arthur to Brazoria County, as well as through portions of Fort Bend County and extending into the Katy area.
