Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for Katy-area residents who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.
A HOSPITAL IN KATY offers a variety of volunteer opportunities from which to choose. Assignments can include greeting patients and visitors at the information desk, serving as liaison between staff and patients, filing, answering the phone, or working in the gift shop. Weekly four-hour shifts for most assignments are available mornings and afternoons, Mondays through Fridays. Gift shop shifts can also be scheduled for evenings or weekends.
BE A MENTOR to a young person who has been in trouble. A Katy social service agency can pair you with a boy or girl who will benefit from your companionship and guidance. Training will help you learn how to develop a constructive, caring relationship with your new friend. This opportunity is available weekdays, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and weekends from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Volunteers should be at least 21 years of age.
CHILDBIRTH EDUCATORS are needed for women going through unplanned pregnancies. Women who have themselves undergone labor, particularly those with certification in childbirth education, can provide an ongoing series of childbirth classes to clients, covering topics such as the importance of placing trust in the pregnancy and labor processes and the options available in managing labor. Sessions are available weekday mornings, afternoons, and evenings in the Katy area.
RAISE A PUPPY for an organization that assigns guide dogs to visually impaired people. In-depth instruction will equip you to care for and train a puppy that will eventually become a companion to someone in need of the dog’s services. This responsible assignment calls for mature volunteers willing to integrate the dog thoroughly into their family lives and daily routines. The duration of commitment varies but is typically in the range of 12 to 18 months.
