The Katy City Council has authorized the Katy Development Authority to hold public hearings on the use of METRO funds for transportation projects within the city.
At Monday’s meeting, city council approved a resolution giving the development authority permission to hold the hearings on behalf of the city, and to make recommendations on the possible use of $1.6 million in transportation funds.
One item under consideration for METRO funding is the city’s proposed Cane Island Parkway on the west side of the city.
Still on the drawing board, the Cane Island Parkway will run from Morton Road near the Lakes of Katy subdivision south through the proposed Cane Island development, the West Ten business park and ending at IH-10 west of FM 1463.
The parkway will be a primary route through Cane Island, an upscale development designed to include 1,968 lots for home sites, 20.7 acres of commercial development, several lakes, a recreation center and an elementary school.
Councilman Fabol Hughes asked if giving the authorization “came with any strings attached.”
City Attorney Art Pertile said any recommendation from the Katy Development Authority must also be approved by city council.
“Council will still have final say before any final decision on an expenditure (of funds),” Pertile said.
On a unanimous vote, city council authorized letting the development authority hold the hearings.
No hearing dates were announced.
