Morton Ranch High and Beck Junior High have taken top honors at the Destination ImagiNation Gulf Coast regional tournament.
The tournament was held at Cinco Ranch High School.
Beck Junior High’s “DIE Hard” team brought home the first place trophy in a challenge that featured robotic design, while Morton Ranch High’s “Mavs 3” team earned top honors in an event called “DI eXtreme,” which is open only to high school teams.
Mavs 3 also placed second in a challenge showcasing their improvisational skills.
More than 250 teams from area public and private schools took part in the event, showcasing their creative problem-solving skills to difficult challenges in highly creative skits. The various challenges represented technical and engineering skills, improvisational skills and theatrical skills.
Additional Katy ISD winners included “The Gods” from McMeans Junior High School (2nd Place); “Wondrous White Tigers” from Stephens Elementary (2nd Place); “Di-BOT Dominators” from Stanley Elementary (2nd Place); “Not From Concentrate” from Cinco Ranch High School (2nd Place); “Super Robot Monkeys” from McMeans Junior High (3rd Place); “Life Savers” from Beckendorff Junior High School (3rd Place); “Paper DIrific” from Beckendorff Junior High (3rd Place); “Rock ‘n’ Rollers” from Hayes Elementary (3rd Place) and the “Imagineers” from Holland Elementary (3rd Place).
The DI Tournament also recognizes outstanding creativity, teamwork, and engineering by presenting several prestigious awards.
Beckendorff Junior High School’s “Becken-Bots” team won the Spirit of DI award for exceptional teamwork, while the school’s “Life Savers” team won the Renaissance Award for outstanding innovation.
“The Gods” from McMeans Junior High School also earned the Renaissance Award.
Katy Elementary’s “Mighty Tigers” won the DaVinci Medal for outstanding creativity.
Teams from Morton Ranch High School, Cinco Ranch High School, Beck Junior High, Stanley Elementary and Stephens Elementary will advance to the state DI Tournament to be held in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD April 16-18.
Top-scoring teams from the state tournament will compete at the Global DI Tournament in Tennessee in May.
