The effort was part of the organization’s “Give A Kid A Flag To Wave” project.

The recipients were encouraged to wave the flags during the parade and then save them as a patriotic keepsake of the event.

The flags were sponsored by Dish TV Katy, a Dish Network retailer, and Fort Bend County Pct. 3 Commissioner Andy Meyers.

This year’s parade route was lined by an estimated 5,000 spectators. That was a record turn-out for the parade, according to organizers.

The club has been distributing the flags along the parade route since 2005.

The Exchange Club has previously been honored with a formal proclamation from the City of Katy for its participation in the flag program, as well as its promotion of patriotic values among young people. It also received an Americanism Award from the city in 2005.

Established in 1981, the “Give A Kid A Flag To Wave” project was designed to encourage citizenship and patriotism among the nation’s young people.

The Greater Katy Exchange Club meets the first and third Wednesday of each month at Vida Loca Mexican Bar and Grill, 21810 Kingsland Blvd.
