Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for Katy-area residents who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.

Here are some current needs:

A FEW GOOD MEN are wanted as mentors at a Katy residential facility for children who have suffered from abuse or neglect.  If you have a good rapport with boys between the ages of 11 and 17, consider coming by once a week (on weekdays between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.) to interact with one of these kids in shared recreation and friendly conversation.  Volunteers should be at least 21 years of age.

CARE AND CONSOLATION are provided to terminally ill persons and their families through a hospice program serving Katy and surrounding areas. As a volunteer with the program’s multi-disciplinary support team, you can be a friend and resource to a patient during the final stages of illness and counsel with family members after the patient’s death. Comprehensive training is provided.

FUN AND FRESH AIR are in store for volunteers participating in a therapeutic horseback-riding program for children ages 5 and under with disabilities.  Based at stables in Richmond, the program engages volunteers in accompanying these children while they enjoy the unique thrill of a quiet horseback stroll in a protected environment.  Volunteers can get involved in weekday or Saturday sessions.

WORK UP A SWEAT helping low-income families achieve the American dream of home ownership.   Providing general construction help for a housing program serving Katy and neighboring areas, you’ll bring hope to families who are trying to make a new start. Even if you have no background in construction, you can be easily trained in ways to participate effectively in this initiative.  Morning and afternoon shifts are available on Saturdays.
