Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for Katy-area residents who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.
Here are some current needs:
CHILDBIRTH EDUCATORS are needed for women going through unplanned pregnancies. Women who have themselves undergone labor, particularly those with certification in childbirth education, can provide an ongoing series of childbirth classes to clients, covering topics such as the importance of placing trust in the pregnancy and labor processes and the options available in managing labor. Sessions are available weekday mornings, afternoons, and evenings in the Katy area.
CREATE MEMORIES lasting a lifetime by becoming a mentor to a boy or girl, between the ages of 6 and 15, from a single-parent home. Getting together twice a month at mutually convenient times, the two of you can enjoy recreational activities or simply discuss his or her problems and aspirations. The sponsoring agency will provide you with training and ongoing support. This assignment requires a driver’s license and background check.
PRIVATE PILOTS can log some flying time while helping persons with serious medical problems. The regional chapter of a national pilots’ network is recruiting volunteer pilots to use their own planes to fly ambulatory patients in outlying areas to and from medical facilities throughout greater Houston. Flights are arranged to fit the pilots’ schedules and geographical preferences. Expenses incurred in the assignment are tax deductible.
READ ALOUD to a small group of residents at an Alzheimer’s care facility in Katy. If you have a clear reading voice, plan on coming by to help stimulate residents’ minds and keep their spirits bright. Material read can include inspirational passages, Bible study selections, or pieces chosen for their entertainment value. Your visits can take place on weekdays or weekends, during the morning or afternoon.
