The Katy Police Department is applying for a Department of Justice grant in hopes of receiving enough funding to replace ten outdated hand-held radios.

If funding is approved, the department plans on replacing the outdated radios with new digital models that will provide greater communication capabilities.

City council this week approved moving ahead with the $47,000 grant application on the recommendation of Police Chief Bill Hastings.

Hastings said the department had already replaced a number of the older radios with funding from the asset forfeiture fund, but there was not enough money to cover all the radios that need updating.

“The current ones are basically obsolete. We can’t get parts when we need to repair them,” Hastings explained.

The money is being requested through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant. The program is the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions.
