The first meeting of the Katy Community Higher Education Task Force for 2010 will be held this Tuesday, Jan. 12, in the board room of the Katy ISD Education Support Complex in Katy.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Following welcoming remarks from State Sen. Glenn Hegar and State Rep. Bill Callegari, the task force will hear from Ed Hugetz, assistant vice chancellor for system planning and community outreach at the University of Houston.

Hugetz will provide a detailed overview of the university’s partnerships in the Katy area, as well as possibilities for future cooperative efforts.

There is a question-and-answer period scheduled following Hugetz’ presentation.

The task force was organized last summer under the leadership of Hegar and Callegari and is designed to improve and expand higher education opportunities for students and businesses. The stated goal of the group is to create a seamless transition between high school and post-secondary opportunities, provide students with work-based learning experiences and provide businesses with workers trained in the skills that are needed most.

Members of the task force include Ann Davis, Mayor Don Elder, KISD Superintendent Alton Frailey, Mace Hirt, Katy Chamber President and CEO Ann Hodge, State Sen. Joan Huffman, Tracy Janda, Katy EDC President Lance LaCour, Peyton Lumpkin, Jack McCabe, State Sen. Dan Patrick, State Rep. Hubert Vo, Jamie Wolman, State Rep. John Zerwas, Robert Garza, Van Martin, Liz O’Donnell, Mona Covington and Anna Web-Storey.
