Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for Katy-area residents who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.
Here are some current needs:
A HOSPITAL IN KATY offers a variety of volunteer opportunities from which to choose. Assignments can include greeting patients and visitors at the information desk, serving as liaison between staff and patients, filing, answering the phone, or working in the gift shop. Weekly four-hour shifts for most assignments are available mornings and afternoons, Mondays through Fridays. Gift shop shifts can also be scheduled for evenings or weekends.
MAKE BLANKETS for infants and small children. An all-volunteer organization based in Katy is looking for persons willing to create blankets for seriously ill or traumatized youngsters, including pediatric cancer patients. The blankets may be sewn, woven, crocheted, knitted, or quilted, and size doesn’t matter. You can do the work at home and on your own schedule, and the amount you make is wholly up to you.
SERVE AS OMBUDSMAN for a health agency monitoring the quality of care at greater Houston area nursing homes. If you have good communication skills and a deep concern for the well-being of the elderly and disabled, you’ll receive in-depth training and certification that will equip you to work with a nursing home’s staff and residents in mediating problems that arise. Time involved averages just a few hours a week.
SPECIAL-NEEDS CHILDREN respond enthusiastically to the love and attention they get from caring adults in a program called “Family Friends”. Each volunteer is assigned a child to visit once a week for a one-to-one session of recreation and conversation. These get-togethers help enrich the youngsters’ self-esteem and give their parents a little time off to attend to other matters. Training is provided.
