A multi-jurisdictional airport zoning board is two steps closer to reality following the enactment of ordinances by city councils in both Katy and Fulshear this week.

The ordinances establish a joint airport safety board for the protection of the air space around the Houston Executive Airport, located between Katy and Brookshire in Waller County.

The board will have the authority to adopt regulations and establish zones and boundaries to ensure the safety of aircraft operating out of the airport.

The zoning board will primarily regulate the height of structures and natural growth around the airport.

In addition to Katy and Fulshear, the City of Brookshire and Waller and Fort Bend counties have been asked to approve similar ordinances. The Brookshire City Council has possible action on the measure scheduled for tomorrow night’s meeting.

In a letter to Katy Mayor Don Elder, Jr., the Houston Executive Airport Director Andrew D. Perry said he hoped to get approval from all governmental bodies by the end of the year.

Both Katy and Fulshear also held public hearings on the proposed ordinance before taking action. In both cases, no one spoke in favor or opposition to the ordinance.

Katy City Councilman Larry Gore asked if the zoning board would restrict any of farmers currently operating in the area. Perry assured him current land use would not be affected.

“This only requires anything 200 feet in the air to be approved,” Perry said.

Both councils approved the ordinance on unanimous votes.
