Rep. Ron Paul (R-Lake Jackson), joined by Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-AZ), has again introduced legislation to halt the automatic pay raise for members of Congress.
Paul has traditionally opposed the system of granting Members of Congress an automatic annual pay raise.
The raise is granted automatically by law unless the Congress votes to reject the pay increase.
Paul and Mitchell have introduced H.R. 4255 to reject the pay increase, and have sent out a “Dear Colleague” letter to all other Members of Congress asking them to sign on as cosponsors of the bill.
Paul and Mitchell’s efforts to stop the pay raise for 2010 was successful earlier this year. It is their belief that with high unemployment and the economic turmoil the nation continues to face, it is inappropriate for Congress to raise its own salary.
“We Members of Congress should not be padding our pocketbooks when our constituents are still tightening their belts and losing their jobs,” Paul said in announcing the bill.
Paul’s congressional district includes portions of Fort Bend County, including much of Cinco Ranch.
The current salary for rank-and-file members of the House and Senate is $174,000 per year.
