Taking second place in the affiliate category of communities nationwide with a population of less than 50,000, Keep Katy Beautiful was honored for its dedication and hard work in the areas of beautification, community improvement, education, waste reduction, litter prevention, public awareness, community involvement and recognition programs.

The 56th Annual Keep America Beautiful National Conference, held in Washington, D.C., brought together award-winning affiliates from across the country to share best practices and celebrate the success of the last 12 months.

The honored affiliates encourage individuals to make simple daily choices and to engage in volunteer activities that improve their communities and the local environment.

The City of Katy Parks and Recreation Department took first place in the beautification category for its efforts in establishing a playground for handicapped children in Katy City Park.

The department recognized that there was a tremendous need for a park and playground for handicapped children in Katy and the Houston metro area. As a result, the city and parks department brought together numerous community organizations, businesses, volunteers and committed residents to fundraise and build a new playground for the children. Today the park is a recognized asset to the community, allowing children of all abilities and all ages to enjoy the outdoors and play together in a safe environment.

Keep Katy Beautiful was also honored with the 2009 President Circle Recognition Award for maintaining “good standing” status with Keep America Beautiful.

Keep America Beautiful, Inc. established in 1953, is the nation’s largest volunteer-based community action and education organization. The national nonprofit forms public-private partnerships and programs that encourage individuals to take greater responsibility for improving their community environments.

Attending the conference from Katy were Kathy Wiesner, Keep Katy Beautiful Board member; Jamie Wolman, Keep Katy Beautiful Board member and Jennifer Jones Archer, City of Katy Parks and Recreation Director.
