Houston Baptist University will celebrate “Homecoming 2009: Embrace Tradition,” with a full schedule of events planned for Nov. 4-8.
Highlights include the annual Brown Distinguished Lecture, featuring National Oilwell Varco CEO Merril A. “Pete” Miller Jr., on Thursday, Nov. 5.
Also part of the homecoming will be the Spirit of HBU Alumni Awards Dinner on Friday, Nov. 6, as well as the traditional barbecue dinner followed by the Husky basketball game against the University of the Ozarks on Saturday, Nov. 7.
During the Spirit of HBU Alumni Awards Dinner, the alumni association will recognize two university alumni and one HBU faculty member with special awards.
Randall Sorrels, Class of ’84, a Houston attorney and partner at Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Agosto & Friend, will be named the 2009 Distinguished Alumnus for his distinctive contributions to the legal profession. Terry Lewis, also Class of ’84, will be named the 2009 Meritorious Service Alumnus in recognition of his significant, sustained contributions of time, energy and creativity toward the advancement of the university, specifically its Husky Athletics program.
Dr. Shari Wescott, professor in accounting, will receive the 2009 Hallmark Award, which is presented to a faculty or staff member who has provided significant support to the alumni association.
All three awards include induction into the HBU Walk of Honor.
