Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for Katy-area residents who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.  Here are some current needs:

CARE AND CONSOLATION are provided to terminally ill persons and their families through a hospice program serving Katy and surrounding areas. As a volunteer with the program’s multi-disciplinary support team, you can be a friend and resource to a patient during the final stages of illness and counsel with family members after the patient’s death. Comprehensive training is provided.

FUN AND FRESH AIR are in store for volunteers participating in a therapeutic horseback-riding program for children and adults with disabilities.  Based at stables in Hockley, the program engages volunteers in accompanying these folks while they enjoy the unique thrill of a quiet horseback stroll in a protected environment. Register now to participate in the program’s fall sessions.

SERVE AS OMBUDSMAN for a health agency monitoring the quality of care at greater Houston area nursing homes. If you have good communication skills and a deep concern for the well-being of the elderly and disabled, you’ll receive in-depth training and certification that will equip you to work with a nursing home’s staff and residents in mediating problems that arise. Time involved averages just a few hours a week.

SORT AND ORGANIZE baby gift-donations for a Katy-based agency that assists women experiencing unplanned pregnancies.  By assembling layettes and gift baskets for clients, you will help to provide a warm welcome to life’s newest arrivals.  Volunteer time commitments typically involve two to three hours a week and can be scheduled for morning, afternoon, or evening hours.
