Community

Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.  Here are some current needs:

Animal Lovers

Help Save Our Strays Fort Bend by attending a volunteer orientation in Sugar Land, Saturday, September 19, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Teens and adults will discover how they can assist with upcoming adoption events, manning booths at festivals, fostering animals or organizing fundraising events for this new non-profit that strives to rescue stray and homeless animals out of the shelter environment and place them into loving and responsible homes.

Hospital volunteers

A “people person” has a variety of volunteer opportunities from which to choose at either of two hospitals, one in Richmond, and the other in Sugar Land. Assignments can include greeting patients and visitors at the information desk, serving as a liaison between staff and patients in the intensive care unit, or working in the gift shop.  Weekly four-hour shifts are available mornings and afternoons, Mondays through Fridays.

Teens and Young Adults

Mind the children as a volunteer at a United Way agency’s shelter for victims of domestic abuse. Using games and videotapes, you’ll involve a group of youngsters in recreational activities while their moms are at work, training, or counseling sessions. This upbeat assignment is available Mondays through Fridays between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. Individual volunteer shifts typically last two to four hours.

Additional opportunities:

-         A Fort Bend area hospice program needs volunteers to provide support to terminally ill persons and their families.

-         Be a bingo caller and bring cheer and good fellowship to residents of a healthcare center in Missouri City.

-         Connect with a homebound senior through friendly phone calls.

-         Perform interviews and provide helpful feedback to job seekers in a faith based job search program in Fort Bend County.

-         Schedule and coordinate volunteers for a local housing program’s construction site in Rosenberg.

-         Stock shelves and sack groceries at a Stafford social service agency’s food pantry for the needy.
