The San Felipe-Frydek Volunteer Fire Department will hold a barbecue fundraiser Aug. 1 to benefit one of its firefighters who is having spinal surgery because of an off-duty injury.
Firefighters will sell barbecue brisket plates at San Felipe-Frydek Fire Station No. 1, 15023 FM 1458 next to the San Felipe Post Office, starting at 11 a.m.
A limited number of barbecue chicken plates will also be available, as well as soft drinks and desserts.
Proceeds from the barbecue sale will benefit San Felipe-Frydek Firefighter Shane Cheek, who is scheduled for major spinal surgery. Cheek is self-employed and does not have health insurance. He has also been unable to work since his injury.
Money raised will be used to help Cheek with medical bills and household expenses.
“Shane is one of our own and we’re going to do everything we can to help him,” Fire Chief Johnny Hall said. “We hope the community will turn out and help him as well.”
Asst. Fire Chief Darrell Toellner said Cheek’s fellow firefighters are stepping forward to donate the cost of the briskets and other meal items, as well as preparing the barbecue.
“The more we can get donated, the more of the proceeds can go directly to help Shane; that’s what it’s all about,” Toellner said. “Every one of us has worked side-by-side with Shane at fire and rescue scenes and we’re going to do everything we can to help him through a tough time.”
Firefighters will also hold a “fill the boot” campaign in San Felipe the same day, with all donations also going to help Cheek.
