As Katy area residents take part in Fourth of July weekend activities, the National Weather Service is warning celebrants to take precautions for near-record heat.
The weather service has issued a heat advisory for the entire Houston region until 7 p.m. Sunday evening, including the Katy area.
Unusually hot conditions are expected throughout the weekend with afternoon heat indicies ranging from 102 – 106 degrees common across the area. Some areas may see heat index temperatures reach as high as 110.
At about 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, areas west and north of Katy were reporting a temperature of 100 with a heat index of 110.
The current pattern of hot, dry weather is expected to continue through the weekend with high at or neat the century mark under partly cloudy skies
Those planning outdoor activities are strongly urged to avoid prolonged or strenuous physical activity.
The average person’s body can lose up to a gallon of water per hour through perspiration, so people are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Alcohol and caffeinated beverages can increase the rate of water loss from the body, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion or stroke.
When outside, wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a hat to shield yourself from the sun.
The heat advisory is expected to be lifted Sunday night as scattered thunderstorms move into the forecast, bringing down the temperatures and heat indicies.
The high on Monday is expected to be 92 degrees with a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.
