Former Houston Astros ace pitcher, broadcaster and manager Larry Dierker will make a star appearance in his new musical, “Old Stories – A Tale of Baseball and Love” this summer at the Houston Community College Spring Branch Campus.
Written by Dierker, Dr. Aubrey Tucker and Paul English, “Old Stories” is a story about the mythical Washington Capitols and their quest for the National League championship in 1970.
The lighthearted story involves “King” Cole, the Caps’ long-time home run hitter, meeting and falling in love with Cindy, the cousin of a friend, as the team challenges for the league pennant.
The cast of student Music Theater Workshop performers is led by Steve Hale, HCC voice faculty, who plays King, and Virginia Wootten, UH voice major, who plays Cindy.
Dierker plays Sammy Stanton, the team’s announcer, an old school carnie barker in a nostalgic homage to the unseen sports play-by-play men who “painted pictures on the radio.”
Stage direction is by Michelle Robinson, production design and management is by Sydney Yarbrough and music direction is by Tucker and Lucy Cain Hargis.
“Old Stories” will be presented by the HCC Northwest Fine Arts Department in Theater I of the Spring Branch Campus Performing Arts Center on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 7 – 8. Curtain is at 7:30 p.m.
Ticket prices are $10, $5 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Performing Arts Center box office, 1060 W. Sam Houston Parkway. They will be also on sale the evenings of the performances.
