For the third day in a row, Katy area firefighters were kept busy Wednesday battling a stubborn blaze while struggling with temperatures soaring into the high 90s.
Wednesday’s fire consumed an estimated five acres of undeveloped land near Fry and Clay roads.
The Katy Fire Department, assisted by several area volunteer departments, tapped the blaze out shortly after 5 p.m.
No injuries were reported and no homes were damaged by the flames.
On Tuesday, firefighters knocked down a residential fire in the 1900 block of Avenue B. A local plumber was reportedly working on the house at the time and is believed to have accidentally triggered the fire.
One side of the home and a portion of the roof were damaged in the blaze.
This week’s series of fires began on Monday when a warehouse at the K-T Bolt Manufacturing complex was completely destroyed in an afternoon blaze. Firefighters from a number of area departments spent most of the afternoon battling the stubborn fire.
The burning warehouse was reportedly being leased to Brammer’s Athletic Wear and contained sports apparel and equipment. Both the contents and building were total losses.
Firefighters from a number of area departments, including the Houston Fire Department, responded to assist the Katy Fire Department.
Heavy equipment was used to knock down walls of the building to give firefighters access to the source of the fire. Firefighters used aerial water streams to keep the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings.
At one point, firefighters asked public works officials if they could release more water into the system to increase pressure, but heavy demands due to the heat and drought conditions kept pressures below normal and limited the water available to fight the blaze.
The cause of that blaze remains under investigation.
