Hastings Replaces Frazier As Katy’s Police Chief

With the resignation of long-time Katy Police Chief R.L. “Buddy” Frazier, another veteran Katy police officer has taken the reins as that city’s top cop.

William “Bill” Hastings has taken over as Katy’s police chief, saying he plans few changes and will continue with Frazier’s basic focus on keeping residents safe.

Hastings has been serving as assistant police chief under Frazier since 1999.

At Frazier’s recent retirement party, Hastings said he was “honored” to succeed the retiring chief, pointing out that he has big shoes to fill.

“I’m honored to be replacing such a good man; a man who has led the department in the way he has is going to be hard to match,” Hastings said.

He added that his goal had always been to some day become police chief, something Hastings told Frazier during the hiring process.

“He asked me where I’d like to be in 20 years, and I said ‘right where you are,’” Hastings recalled.

A resident of Katy for 35 years, Hastings has more than two decades of service with the Katy Police Department.

Hastings got his start in public safety as a paramedic with the Village Fire Department. He later became an arson investigator, marking his transition into the law enforcement field.

In addition to serving with the Katy Police Department, Hastings also worked on the Harris County Organized Crime Narcotics Task Force.

Hastings is a 1999 graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy.
