Katy Council Tables Decision On Waller County Planning Group

The Katy City Council has tabled a decision on joining the Waller County Sub-Regional Planning Commission until they can receive more information on the organization’s plans and operation.

Representatives of the commission appeared at a December council meeting to invite Katy officials to join; however, no one from the group was present at Monday’s council meeting to answer questions.

Council Member Carol Adams said she had several questions about the commission before she would be ready to cast a vote.

“Since there’s no one here to answer questions, I move that we wait,” Adams proposed.

Mayor Don Elder agreed that more information was needed before the council could make an informed decision.

“There’s no one (who’s) shown us any background on this,” Elder said. “I’d like to see some documentation on how this is working.”

Councilman Larry Gore also recommended holding off on taking any action until clarification is received.

“I think it’s a good idea to wait,” Gore said.

The city was first approached about joining the group in a November letter from commission president Maurice Hart, Jr.

“As of July 1, 2008, the cities/counties of Waller, Pine Island, Hempstead and Waller County have created…the Waller County Sub-Regional Planning Commission to provide for special planning of Waller County. On Oct. 27, 2008, the city of Pattison joined the WCSRPC,” Hart’s letter said.

The letter went on to invite Katy to join the commission and appoint an elected official to serve as the city’s representative to the group.

“We believe that the WCSRPC will allow us to effectively coordinate and plan any state and federal projects that may impact our citizens and economies,” Hart went on to say. “It is the desire of the current WCSRPC members to make the commission as inclusive as possible by including all municipalities and political subdivisions of Waller County to increase the effectiveness and planning capabilities of the commission as a whole. We are hopeful that the city of Katy will join us.”

Katy council members voted unanimously to table the decision to join the commission until further information can be obtained.
