Houston Mayor Bill White is expected to announce later today he is running for the U.S. Senate.
White has scheduled a news conference for this afternoon to discuss his political plans. Although he has not disclosed what those plans are, sources close to the mayor are saying White will announce he is running for the Senate seat currently held by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson.
Earlier this month, Hutchinson announced she was establishing a committee to explore the possibility of challenging incumbent governor and fellow Republican Rick Perry in the 2010 gubernatorial race. She also transferred $1 million from her federal campaign account to fund the exploratory committee.
