The Katy Tigers tore through Mayde Creek 41-3 Saturday evening to set up a meeting with Cinco Ranch next Saturday to determine the 17-5A district champion.

Katy (7-2, 4-0) has not lost a game to another Katy ISD team since 1995. The Cougars (8-1, 4-0) have a better overall record than the defending 5A state champion Tigers, but were plagued by seven turnovers in their come-from-behind win Friday night over the Seven Lakes Spartans.

The Cougars edged out Seven Lakes 41-34.

In spite of giving up 329 yards, the Katy defense held the Rams to only three points on a Carlos Castellanos 35-yard field goal at the end of the first quarter. By comparison, the Tigers managed only 325 yards despite the 38 point victory.

Tiger quarterback Parker Ray went 6-for-8 for 80 yards, while back-up Michael Stojkovic was 2-for-3 for 35 yards.

Mayde Creek quarterback Lucas Leonard completed 8 of 20 for 105 yards, but was intercepted twice. Vaughn Miller was 6-for-6 for 53 yards.

One of Leonard’s interceptions was returned 19 yards for a touchdown by Katy’s Caleb Chandler in the second quarter.

Despite the dominant Tiger win, the stats on the game told a somewhat different story. Mayde Creek topped Katy in total yards gained (329 – 325), first downs (16 – 13), number of rushes (35 – 30) and total passing yardage (158-115).

The Rams also led in penalties, however, with three for 35 yards. Katy had only one penalty for 15 yards.

Cinco Ranch had a tough time remaining unbeaten in district play, fighting off both a determined Spartan offense and seven turnovers. Cougar quarterback Shane Ros ran the ball in to score from nine yards out with a minute left in the third quarter. Ros then connected with Joe Norrell to tack on two more, bringing it to 41-34.

Neither team managed to score in the fourth quarter of play.

Ros went 6-for-12 for 58 yards with one interception. Spartan quarterback Dalton Livingston was 10-for-23 on the night, also with one pick.

In other action, Morton Ranch topped Katy Taylor 42-24 Saturday afternoon.

The final week of the regular season will decide who will be the District 17-5A champion, as well as the final two playoff berths.

Katy faces off against Cinco Ranch for the championship in a televised game on Saturday at noon. Cinco has never won a varsity game against the district rival Tigers.

Also on Saturday, Taylor (5-4, 1-3) will face Seven Lakes (3-5, 1-3), while Morton Ranch (6-3, 1-3) takes on Mayde Creek (4-4, 1-3) Friday night. Those two contests will determine who else will make it into post-season play.

All games will be played at Rhodes Stadium in Katy.
